The Polish People's Army (Ludowe Wojsko Polskie) constituted the armed forces of the Polish communist state from 1945 to 1989. It was dominated and controlled by the ruling communist party - initially the Polish Workers' Party, and from 1948 the Polish United Workers' Party - and as part of the Warsaw Pact structures it was subordinate to the command of the Soviet Army.
