Fiat 600 / Seat 600 / Zastava 750 Mod: Suicide Doors & Performance Upgrades
The FIAT 600, designed by Dante Giacosa, was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1955. It quickly became known as the "Italian Ford T" due to its affordability and widespread appeal, not just within Italy but also in Spain and former Yugoslavia.
Original FIAT production in Italy spanned from 1955 to 1969, resulting in over 2.7 million vehicles. In former Yugoslavia, "Zastava" (located in Kragujevac, Serbia) produced an identical model under license from FIAT. From 1962 to 1985, they manufactured 923,487 "Zastava 750"s. This car was a ubiquitous first vehicle for many people across Slovenia, Macedonia, and Croatia during the 1960s, 1970s, and even into the early 1980s.
Similarly, in Spain, it was known as the "SEAT 600". Production took place in Barcelona (Zona Franca) from May 1957 to August 1973, yielding 814,926 units. The SEAT 600 played a significant role in the Spanish economic boom of 1959-1973, which followed the slow recovery from the Spanish Civil War.
Outside Europe, the FIAT 600, nicknamed "Fitito", gained immense popularity in Argentina. Between 1960 and 1982, over 300,000 units were produced in Caseros. Globally, over 4,921,626 FIAT 600s (almost 5 million) were produced, making it a car accessible to nearly everyone.
For GTA5
This mod features an early version of the FIAT 600 with what are commonly known as "suicide doors". This door design, prevalent in cars manufactured during the first half of the 20th century, earned its nickname due to the increased risk of injury to passengers exiting or entering the offside of the vehicle if struck by a passing car.
I anticipated encountering difficulties implementing this type of door in GTA5 since no original vehicles in the game feature them. However, I discovered parameters within "handling.meta" that influence door positioning during entry and exit. Additionally, modifying the "LAYOUT" line in "vehicles.meta" alters the way players enter the car, but also affects other aspects. Through careful experimentation and combination of these parameters, I achieved a compromise in the seating position, resulting in the mod you see today.
Tuning
The tuning options are based on Benny's livery modifications. Certain parts are linked to liveries, enabling a complete transformation of the car's appearance (including the dashboard language). Some livery mods are "blank" but still modify car plates and badges. This approach prevents mod conflicts; for example, the Zastava livery applies Zastava badges, while the Carabinieri livery displays Carabinieri plates.
Independent tuning parts are also available for customization alongside any livery. These include vintage bumper details (front and rear) or ABARTH bumpers. A roll cage is included for Abarth upgrades, along with three exhaust options. You can also swap the steering wheel for an Abarth one. The skirt offers a "wide body" look, but using the "vstancer" mod is recommended to adjust wheel fitment and enhance aesthetics.
