The Polish People's Army (Ludowe Wojsko Polskie) was the name used for the Polish military forces between 1944 and 1989. During this time, the army was dominated and controlled by the ruling communist party – initially the Polish Workers' Party, and from 1948 the Polish United Workers' Party. As part of the Warsaw Pact structures, it was subordinate to the command of the Soviet Army.
